100 Evaluation

What practical skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I have developed new skills in Illustrator and photoshop and even managed to work out how to basically use InDesign.  My time management at the start of this module was very weak, however towards the last week of the module I managed my time a lot better, and even produced more work in 4 days then I had done for the whole project!

What approaches to/methods of problem solving have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

In this module I came across a lot of problems which I was not able to get myself to overcome until the closing stages of the project.  I had problems with time management and motivation and only got it in the last week.  I came across the obvious problems in my work along the way which resulted in me using different software or media etc. I eventually found design sheets was a very useful technique to write and draw exactly what was happening in your head at a certain time.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalize on these?

A strength of mine that I found in the later stages of the project was how I used design sheets to keep a constant evaluation and update on what I was doing.  I also found I was getting ideas down on a page a lot quicker this way rather than using a logbook which I traditionally used to do.
I found the blogs very useful, I find this is the best way for me to place my research and get feedback from fellow classmates on work I was producing and ideas I had come up with.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

I found with this module motivation and inspiration was a big let down for myself.  I came into it fresh headed with nothing to worry about and became lazy with development and research.  What i found useful was if i was in a lazy mood i would simply put this project away and start on another one which I could be motivated to do.
I found myself in the last week with not much work to my name (which is not good for a 5 weeks brief) so I got motivated to shift my ass into gear and do it! I changed my subject completely, started with a fresh slate and produced more work in the final 3 days than I had done in the 5 weeks! Time management and general self management is a big let down during this project! I was staying up late doing what I thought to be work, not eating or drinking properly which i feel may have had a big affect on my motivation.
To address these problems last night i made myself a timetable.  This is includes time at university, time in which i will work, eat, socialize and have 'Marc time' ... but in all seriousness I have already found after a day that I am a lot more motivated from eating and drinking properly and managing myself correctly.

Identify 5 things that you will do differently next time and what you expect to gain from doing these?

1. Use design sheets a lot more in my design process.
2. Document my work as it is produced (mainly through my blog with research)
3. Time management - stay at university after hours, there are great facilities, i need to use them!
4. Manage my work correctly, categorize it into sections (Cheers Lorenzo)
5. Self management ... eat and drink properly, stop starving myself and getting thirsty (lacks my motivation)

Are there anythings we could have done differently that would have benefitted your progress?

I feel as though I had the rite support behind me, I just chose not to take notice or full use of it which I now regret.  The course team did a fantastic job in all of our critisism and to check that our blogs were up to date etc. Thank you!

100 Experiences 4!

Hayhay people ... how are you on this average cold and horrible Leeds day? Well im great, thanks for asking : ) Anyway back to what I should be talking about ... my work!
So on my last post I commented on how I was going to produce my very own passport to relate it to my project title ' 100 Experiences ' I thought this would be a great relationship between experience and travel ... so let the designing begin!
Ok not quite there yet ... firstly I needed to do first hand research and look at my already existing passport, take a few photographs and then carry on ... so here they are!

Hmm ... sweeeeeeeeet! So this will do for some images to help me carry on with my designs!

Post you later! Love as always x

100 Experiences 3!

Ok ... so not much to show to be honest! But I just had a group crit which was pretty wicked! Basically went through the work that I have done so far which went very well! The group commented on how they liked the layout and style that I used but thought I should experiment more with type faces. So what I know at the minute is that I need to finish my first book (16 leaves, 32 pages) which wont take me too long I dont think!
But anyway ... once I have achieved this I can continue to develop my final book, and in the group crit we discussed how I could make the book more personal and different from a normal book, the conclusion ... well I will make my own passport / book ...

... Shweeeet! Love you x

100 Experiences 2!

Ok ... so whilst practicing with a few layouts of pages etc, I decided to have a quick play to try and mix and match the pages together (or the book wont make sense and would be useless)
So anyway ... below is an example of when I first put the two pieces together, and below that is another piece after I have experimented with it!

Ok ... so this is as I just literally put the two pieces together, and as you can see, they really dont compliment each other at all! The types colours do not match for a start, then the illustration on the left hand page does not carry on into the right hand side, this also needs looking into!

So as you can now see, so far I have tidied up the typography, changed the colour and used a different font on the right hand side ... works a lot better and now the pages are starting to make sense! Now for the illustration!

Ok ... well this is basically the final piece for the double page! I can see a few areas which I am wanting to edit still and improve, bit of a perfectionist i must admit! However I did this in 10 minutes just to show you how I need to work on the layout!

2:30am ... niceeee! Love as always x

100 Experiences!

Aiteee ... so I have been playing around with some images and on photoshop and have produced some pieces which will be going into my first 100 book! Im going to put a couple of photos down for examples, they are not yet finished and I know I can produce better but I have a feeling that the subject of my '100' will soon change!

Ahhh yeh so i like the first couple which I produced, however the piece above (Sydney harbor bridge) im a bit unsure about ... i just dont feel as though it would interest my audience and is not eye catching enough unlike the other two pieces!

Gotta dash ... I have a pizza cooking! Love you x

Get cape. wear cape. fly

So yeh, was at a really good mates flat the other night and spotted she had an album I have wanted for ages, being cheeky I borrowed it off her and went to burn it onto my laptop! while this was going on I decided to have a look at the album cover and booklet ... and I could not believe how it related so well to my project! I took some pictures for you guys to have a look just incase you haven't seen it before!

So yeh ... basically im loving the layout of the booklet! Also it has been produced with the background to appear as parcel paper which I think is a great idea and relates well to travel? The hand written typography is also a big hit in my books, although im not sure if I will use that in my book!

Anyway, better shoot ... got washing to do! Loves x

Thats a book?!

Alrightttt ... so there I was just browsing the web at different book designs, you know, the usual stuff; vibrant colours, bold text and some scary pictures! But then I came across these unusual covers, and im not actually joking, these are weird! However, I do think the people who designed them are very talented individuals ... they may have been smoking something at the time? But in all seriousness, prepare to be amazed at what you can actually do!

Even if your like me, and the only thing you read tends to be the occasional car magazine or a porno you ' found ' in your flat ... you can appreciate just how amazing this design is! It is so inventive, original and perfectly well sculpted all you can really do is love this no matter what!

Ok ... we have all had a pop-up book at some point in our lives ... it usually tends to be of a dog jumping in a puddle or something, this however is something else! This full pop-up book allows you to construct a full dinning table ... delicious!

This is stunning ... a book made of layers which you can see rite the way through ... I cant really say much, its gorgeous!

Yeh ... im not going to lie, I dont have a clue, and yes, I know what your thinking ... ' Marc was so rite about them smoking something '

Yeh I know ... I was so rite! However I was also rite saying just how mind blowing and stunning these books are! Dont worry, I still have a couple more examples for you my lovers!

This one is possibly my favorite, I stared and stared at this book for around 10 minutes ... it really is out of this world, every second i found a new detail, could you image making this book ... shitttttt!

Last but not least ... the book which is sooooo well constructed the designer does not want any of us putting our filthy fingers on it ... cant say I blame them, I would hunt down anyone who touched it if I made it! But in all seriousness, although these books are stunning to look at and more than likely read like normal books, my talent does not excel this far (yet) so I will leave this to the pro's for a couple more years!

You look so good rite now ... Love always x

Flickr.com

Soo ... while browsing the web for books on typography I found a couple of books I was hugely interested in! The whole layout and cover design was very visually interesting and has inspired me into designing mine to resemble it in some ways!

The book above was designed by Efrain Lopez! While the book below was designed by Jenna Carberg!

The books above are in my opinion ... awesome! They are both very original and although similar inside being about typography, the covers make such a huge difference to your opinion on the book. My favorite out of the two is the one directly above, I love the style with the postage stamp and the tied piece of rope around it like a package, this is type of style I wish for my front cover to resemble!

Typography research!

Ok ... so since I am going to have my fair of typography in my book I thought it would be a good idea to look into some examples which I liked! I came across a designer called David Airey ... he has a huge range of work from photography, logo design, poster design etc but the one which interested me was Typography.  So below are a few examples of his work which i thought set a good wide range of examples and different techniques!

Ok ... so there are a few examples for you to feast your eyes upon while I start to develop my typography skills as well as I can in this project!

You had a haircut ... looks great, love you x

100 Experiences!

Title: 100 Experiences
Focus: Produce at least one book that investigates my 100 chosen ' Experiences '

Identify specific areas of research that you intend to investigate and methods that you will use.  What form does your information take? Facts, figures, statistics, type, text, image, lists, drawings?

I intend to use images, text/type, drawings and basic sketches to record my information.  I will also be using a collection of leaflets, tickets and memorabilia from my journey around the world! Because my project title is so broad I am also going to have to break my research down into smaller categories.

Identify specific practical methods and technical processes that you intend to use in order to visually develop your ideas. What will you use? Software, photography, drawing, making, typography ... ? What practical skills do you have at your disposal? Are they appropriate? How will you use them? What workshops can you access and when? What skills will you have developed and how will you use them to explore ideas?

I will be using photography, drawing and text (typography) in my book. I will be using such software as photoshop and illustrator to build the pages in my book! As I previously mentioned I will be using photographs from my experiences, tickets, slips of paper etc! I will also be trying to develop my drawing skills in this project, I see this as a good opportunity as we are also learning new skills in this area in visual language.

What methods will you use to evaluate the process and success of your work? Ongoing visual and written evaluation in sketch books/notebooks? Market Testing? Crit and group input? Final written evaluations? What will you be evaluating against?

I will be using my notebooks and sketchbooks to keep a constant daily evaluation of the work i had achieved.  I will also be using my blog to document photographs and on going development of my book.

This should be fun ... damn I still love you! x

What is a Book 4?!

Oohhh yeh I had to tell you ... I bought a book in Australia, and my god what a book!
Its name ... ' I HOPE THEY SERVE BEER IN HELL ' ahaha its amazing! Its basically about a Law student who got himself in different situations and his experiences of life so far!

A very good read for people with a broad and very open sense of humor ... for those people who dont believe me here are two quotes from the back of the book:

' I used to believe in God before I read your book, but I think if there was a God he wouldnt have a piece of scum like you walking on this plannet! '

' You have made my view of life so much better now, you really are amazing, if you slept with my girlfriend it would make me love her more! '

...... Awesome! x

What is a Book 3?!

Shweeeet! I said my research would eventually pay off ... and I have found an awesome book!

Fully Booked - R. Klanten and M. Hubner!

This book is class ... it was released in May 2008 and inside its hard backed covers there is page after page of ... ' current cover art and book design that strikes a crucial balance between sophisticated visual and content design on the other hand, and the markets demand for availability, legibility and durability on the other ' ... in my words ... its a book full of useful tips and past designs which could be very useful for inspiration! Below i have included several images of the book itself ... I can see me investing in this book once I arrive back in Leeds!

As I said ... it looks awesome dont it? Defo an investment at the book shop!

Love youuuuu x

What is a Book 2?!

Ooook ... so while doing my research I thought it maybe a good idea to look into some of the most popular books sold in the world today! The result did actually sort of shock me ... see what you think!
Well ... obviously number 1 is the Bible ... still selling well even after 2000 years, not a bad effort to be fair but im not really bothered about that ... this is just some research ... it might get me somewhere in the end ahaha! Anyway, other popular books of 2008 are:

Harry Potter was obviously a big seller in 2008 .. and probably will be a big seller in years too come!

Twilight - Stephenie Meyer ... according to a fellow bloggers site it was a very popular book in 2008 ... I will take their word for it!

Now ... im sure a lot of people have heard of this author? The reason im sure of that is because the only thing I tend to read is the newspaper and leaflets for clubs but this authors books are actually really good, good job Sir!

Hmm ... still love you x

What is a Book?!

Well ... when asked this question i immediately had an answer BUT I thought it would be a better idea if  actually researched into this question instead of really ballsing it up!
So straight away like the average human I went to google a.k.a The Saviour ... and listed below are just several suggestions / opinions of what a book is!

- A written work or composition that has been published (printed on pages bound together)
- Physical objects consisting of a number of pages bound together
- A set of written, printed or blank pages fastened along one side and encased between protective covers
- A main division of a larger printed or written work

Its been a while but damn ... I still love you! x

Stairwells and Shadows!

Ok ... so we selected an area of which we wanted to work on more from our 100 brief.  While people selected things which were simple enough to do, I felt I should challenge myself, therefor I decided to mix Stairwells and Shadows together ... mmm lovely!

Just a couple of examples of my stairwells and shadows!  The reason I decided to give these as examples is because they both set off different moods and people will appreciate one more from the other one ... I personally like the bottom one, more moody, dark and visually interesting!

Have you had a new hair cut ... very fetching! x

100!

Ok ... basically here are several of my images which I took over the last few days for the 100 brief ... I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them!

Well ... there are 96 more final images ... and 300 more useless
images, but I thought I would give you a little taster of what sort of things we had to photograph!

Not said it in a while ... I love you x

100!

Ok ... so when our course tutor said ... your new brief is to take 100 shots, I honestly thought lets get our asses down the pub then!  But ... NO ... it was to take a minimum of 100 photographs!  Although im not going to load any examples of my images until later in the week ... I thought you might like this photo ... compliments of Chris Matthews (christophermatthewsbagd.blogspot.com)

Aint it cool ... your pretty cool ... I love you x
